Funds

Fund yields and returns

Fund return figures can look comparable while measuring different things. Before comparing two percentages, check what each figure actually represents.

Yield versus total return

Yield usually describes income generated relative to value, while total return can include both income and changes in the value of the investment.

The right measure depends on the type of fund and what the published figure is intended to show.

Gross versus net

A gross figure is calculated before some fees or expenses. A net figure reflects more of what remains for the investor.

If two providers use different conventions, comparing the headline numbers directly can be misleading.

Annualised does not mean guaranteed

Annualising converts a shorter-period rate into an annual equivalent. It does not promise that the same rate will continue for a full year.

The underlying portfolio and market rates can change.

General information only. Investment products can lose value, and terms, fees and regulation can change.
