How to compare investment funds

Start with what the fund owns and what it is trying to do. Only then compare returns, fees and access.

Start with the mandate

Check the fund objective, permitted assets and any concentration limits. Funds with different mandates should not be ranked as though they are the same product.

A higher return may simply reflect taking different risk.

Use comparable numbers

Check whether returns are gross or net, annualised or realised, and whether the comparison period is the same.

Then include fees, minimums and withdrawal conditions.

Look through to the portfolio

Holdings, issuer concentration, maturity and liquidity often explain more than a marketing label.

The portfolio is where the fund’s actual economic exposure sits.

General information only. Investment products can lose value, and terms, fees and regulation can change.
