Fund fees explained

Fees reduce the return that remains for investors. The useful question is not only what a fee is called, but how and when it is charged.

Management and operating costs

Funds may charge a management fee and may also incur other operating expenses. Some costs are reflected directly in the fund value rather than billed separately.

The fund documents should explain which charges apply.

Entry and exit charges

Some products can charge when money enters or leaves the fund, while others do not.

These costs matter more when an investment is held for a short period.

Compare after-cost outcomes

A higher gross return can still produce a lower net result if costs are materially higher.

Comparisons should therefore use the same return convention and include relevant charges.

General information only. Investment products can lose value, and terms, fees and regulation can change.
