Exotic currency pairs

Exotic pairs usually combine a heavily traded currency with one from a smaller or less-liquid market.

How it works

The label is informal, but the practical differences often include lower liquidity, wider spreads, different trading hours and greater sensitivity to local policy.

What to check

Check whether the local currency is freely convertible, whether capital controls apply and how the broker sources prices. Contract terms can matter more than the marketing category.

  • Check convertibility and controls
  • Expect wider spreads
  • Study local policy and market structure

Limits and risks

Wide spreads, gaps and local policy changes can make these pairs significantly harder to trade than major currencies.
