Crypto regulation in Africa

Crypto regulation across Africa is country-specific rather than governed by one continent-wide licence.

How it works

South Africa has an FSCA crypto-asset service-provider framework, while Nigeria's SEC operates registration and incubation programmes for virtual-asset providers. Other countries use different combinations of securities, payments and anti-money-laundering rules.

What to check

Check the relevant national regulator and the exact legal entity serving the customer. A provider authorized in one African country should not be assumed to be authorized everywhere else.

  • Check the national regulator
  • Distinguish licence from approval-in-principle
  • Verify the legal entity

Limits and risks

Regulatory status changes and can involve approvals-in-principle rather than full licences. Baini provider pages should state the exact status and verification date instead of using a generic 'regulated in Africa' claim.
