What is an ETF?

An exchange-traded fund, or ETF, is a fund whose shares trade on an exchange. Many track an index, but ETFs can follow many different strategies.

Fund plus exchange listing

An ETF owns a portfolio according to its mandate while investors buy and sell ETF shares on a market.

That combines pooled investment exposure with exchange trading.

Index tracking is common, not universal

Many ETFs aim to track an index, but others use active management, factor strategies, bonds, commodities or narrower themes.

The label ETF describes the vehicle, not the investment strategy.

What to compare

Look at the underlying holdings, index or mandate, fund fees, trading spread, liquidity and tracking quality.

Two ETFs with similar names can still provide different exposure.

General information only. Investment products can lose value, and terms, fees and regulation can change.
